OUR APPROACH

A small practice with big aspirations.

As a small but growing practice, we strive to attract clinicians who are eager to build their capacities to help clients beyond learning “evidence-based” strategies from graduate school or short-term workshops. We aspire to develop confident, talented, and well-rounded clinicians who invest in their professional development past what is needed for state licensure. This means learning a modality more in-depth with further training in it, and investment in one’s own therapy. Our contracted clinicians participate in study groups, present case material, write about the profession, join professional organizations, volunteer in the community, and do extensive training post-graduation. Each clinician contracted by RTC Counseling is under the direct training and supervision of Raquel Carrera Adams, LCPC, LPC, NCC.

Our Supervisor

Raquel Carrera Adams, LCPC, LPC, NCC

Latina woman sitting on brick stairs outside a building, wearing white shoes, polk-a-dot skirt and black top with black coat. She has black hair and is smiling at the camera.

Raquel helps clinicians deepen their work by better understanding case material and how to become flexible listeners — to not just listen for content, but to pick up on various aspects of psychodynamic listening. Listening psychodynamically involves following clients’ conscious communication, while also trying to hear what is just below the surface, in the unconscious. This helps us better understand clients’ conflicts, transferences, defenses, and symbolic meaning. All of these elements have significant importance in deepening clients’ understanding of themselves and what brought them to therapy.

Raquel is a Board Certified (NBCC) Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in the state of Maryland and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the District of Columbia and Commonwealth of Virginia. She is a Board Approved Supervisor for Maryland and for Virginia Counselors In-Training. She can also provide supervision to District of Columbia LGPCs needing hours for licensure.  She received her Master’s of Science degree in Clinical Counseling from Johns Hopkins University and studied Psychology at Towson University.

Raquel prioritizes improving the quality of treatment offered to individuals coming to her practice and invests in ongoing professional development to better train new therapists entering the field. She not only supervises counselors-in-training, but works with Howard University Psychiatry Residents’ looking to gain more skills in psychotherapy. She also teaches at the Washington Baltimore Institute’s Psychoanalytic Studies Program, a two year post-graduate certificate program.
